Taiwanese Delegation at Shadow Robot’s Production Facility

We were very privileged to welcome the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) from Taiwan to our production facility in London this week. The trip was arranged by the British Office as part of a mission to promote trade between the UK and Taiwan. In August, our MD Rich Walker travelled to Taipei with other UK businesses as part of the robotics trade mission, so we were extremely happy to return the favour!

The delegation included Dr. Nelson Chang from the ITRI Robotic department, who spoke about the technologies they have been working on. We also took the opportunity to give our delegates a sneak peek at our new innovation, the Shadow Smart Grasping System (SGS).

The ITRI were the perfect crowd to discuss our new system with as the Smart Grasper is for industrial use. Unlike our dexterous Hand, the SGS is non-anthropomorphic, and was designed with manufacturing in mind. It is an intelligent system that has a library of different grasps, meaning you can use one Hand to pick up many different types of object, which reduces the need for multiple machines in your factory.

The ITRI is a nonprofit R&D organisation engaging in applied research and technical services, aiming to innovate a better future. Founded in 1973, ITRI has been dedicated to helping industries stay competitive and sustainable. Over the years, the Institute has nurtured more than 240 companies, including well-known global semiconductor leaders such as TSMC and UMC. Meanwhile, it has cultivated over 140 CEOs in the local high-tech industry.

It was a great day with the ITRI, rounded off with afternoon tea (what’s more British than tea and scones?). The trip was arranged by the British Office in Taiwan, and we extend our thanks to the team for their help. Also, our thanks to Dr Chang for his presentation, and also to Cindy Hsu for her outstanding help and support with the scheduling.
