The Shadow Robot Company is an established, employee-owned, international and world-leading robotics company of a diverse team of 25 people in London and Madrid.


Due to new project funding for the next 4 years, we’re looking to expand our London-based R&D team.

Your Impact as our new Robotics Design Mechanical Engineer:

You’ll be a vital part of our R&D team, focusing on the design, prototyping and development, and testing of electromechanical systems for our robotic platforms.

You’ll work on mechanical design, actuator integration, kinematics, and materials selection.

You’ll collaborate with suppliers and manufacturers, optimize mechanical designs, and ensure robust testing.

Your expertise will contribute to the advancement of our dexterous hand products and teleoperation systems.

You’ll have the autonomy to drive projects forward, and be part of a team which reports directly to senior management.

To be successful in this new Robotics Design Mechanical Engineer role, we’d love to hear from you if you have the following experience and personality:

Extensive experience in mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks preferred).

A track record of troubleshooting and solving engineering problems that arise during the design, manufacturing, or testing phases

Experience in materials selection (in particular plastics, metals and rubbers)

Good understanding of low medium and high volume manufacturing processes (e.g Additive manufacturing, CNC machining, Injection moulding, etc.).

Knowledge of engineering drawings/tolerances/engineering specifications.

Excellent documentation skills.

Nice to have skills and experience (yes, it’s a long list however, these are the extras! The additional desirable skills and knowledge):

Design/specification/execution of mechanical hardware testing (i.e. life testing, robustness testing).

Experience in commissioning the manufacture of components and subassemblies.

Experience in a product design or development environment

Experience gathering and understanding project requirements, creating requirements and specification documents and generating engineering reports.

Understanding of Actuator specification and design

Understanding of Robotic joint design / kinematics

Experience of MCAD/ECAD integration (Solidworks/Altium preferred)

QA/QC processes.

Basic Python or C.

You’ll also have all of the following:

Job title: Robotics Design Mechanical Engineer

Team: R&D

Based: 100% lab based in Gospel Oak, London

Salary range: £50,000 to £55,000 (depending on your experience)

Start date: ASAP

Package includes  28 days holidays + bank holidays

This position requires a minimum of four years of commercial experience and as such is unsuitable for recent graduates.
