Shadow Robot’s Mission to Taiwan…

From 30th August – 2nd September, our MD Rich Walker will be in Taipei as part of the ‘Robotics Mission’, set up by the UK Science and Innovation Network, coinciding with TAIROS, the Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show.

The purpose of the Mission is to build networks and encourage collaboration/ investment opportunities between the UK and Taiwan. We’ll be in good company – robotics experts from Rolls Royce and Aylesbury Automation will also be attending, with the Mission being lead by Professor Guang-Zhong Yang (Chairman of the EPSRC UK Robotics and Autonomous Systems Network and Director of the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London).

Rich and the other Robotics Mission attendees will be meeting with several research institutes whilst in Taiwan, including the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the National Taiwan University and the National Chiao Tung University. Rich said “I’m really excited to be part of presenting the latest UK Robotics technologies in Taiwan – it’s a great opportunity for both countries to get together and see how we can collaborate to create a stronger future!”

On 1st September, Rich will be addressing the UK-Taiwan Robotics Workshop at the British Office, speaking about how Shadow’s work fits into Industry 4.0, as well as explaining more about our Hands. We’ve been building dexterous hands for almost 20 years, and our Shadow Hand is globally recognised as the most advanced robotic hand available. Shadow Hands are fully integrated into ROS, and are used on a wide range of robot platforms. Our team has extensive experience in customising Hand designs and integrating novel sensor technologies (including accurate position and force sensors, motor drive sensing, and contact sensing).

Industry 4.0 refers to the ‘fourth industrial revolution’, with the first being steam power, followed by electric power, and the third being the digital revolution. Industry 4.0 systems include machines that have the technology to connect and communicate intelligently with each other. Our Shadow Hand can be integrated into Industry 4.0 systems to provide dexterity and flexibility in both grasping and handling. As the only truly humaniform manipulator on the market, it allows Industry 4.0 developers to be confident their system can handle whatever the customer needs.

The UK Government has identified Robotics and Autonomous Systems as one of the “Eight Great Technologies” where the UK has strong prospects for growth and employment, which is great news for us. If you’re in Taipei, come and say hi, or link up with us on Twitter.
